All across the country, a groundbreaking movement is forming in the field of health care: art and medicine are becoming one, with remarkable results. In major medical centers such as the University of Florida, Duke, University of California, and Harvard Medical School, patients confronting life-threatening illness and depression are using art, writing, music, and Dance to heal body and soul. -A woman with breast cancer who has never made art before finds healing and empowerment by creating sculpture. -A man with AIDS uses journaling to overcome feelings of despair and helplessness. -A woman suffering from depression following her divorce learns to dance for the first time in her life--and in he body's movement she rediscovers a sense of play and joy. -A musician gives meaning to his art by helping people with illness transform their life through music. -Physicians and nurses are beginning to use creativity to complement and enhance their medical practice. Creative Healing presents readers with the inspiring ways in which the arts (painting, writing, music, and dance) can free the spirit to heal. In one volume, the authors detail the transformative power of a diverse range of artistic activity. Michael Samuels, MD, has over twenty-five years of experience working with cancer patients and is the best-selling author of Seeing with the Mind's Eye and The Well Baby Book. He teams up with fellow pioneer Mary Rockwood Lane, RN, PhD, to share their extraordinary findings on the healing powers of the arts. Through guided imagery, personal stories, and practical exercises, they teach you how to find your "inner artist-healer," enabling you to improve your health, attitude, and sense of well being by immersing yourself in creative activity. Both Samuels and Lane offer invaluable insight through their personal journeys and extensive groundbreaking research, noting that "prayer, art, and healing come from the same source--the human soul." Because there lies an artist and healer within each of us, Creative Healing is an invaluable resource for anyone wishing to discover the beauty of music, dance, writing or art and connect with a deeper part of oneself. Filled with inspiration and guidance, it will help you make changes in your life and the lives of others and gain access to the sacred place where inner peace exists.

DIVA beautiful, artistic offering that offers projects on challenging, but universal subjects. In follow up to Faith Books & Spiritual Journaling, author Sharon Soneff will continue to show that there is a richer, deeper reward to artistic, creative journals beyond the beauty they supply. In this new volume, Art Journals & Creative Healing, she demonstrates with real excerpts from beautiful and unusual artistic journals that the process of journaling can be a tool in navigating through some of lifeÆs more challenging seasons, as well as a tool to support personal growth and achievement. Challenging and complex experiences are treated with dignity and sensitivity, and will inspire readers dealing with their own issues, by placing the greater emphasis on the positive outcome that was yielded for the artist who is willing to be vulnerable in the process. Hope, growth, and healing are at the center of each work, and help deliver the message of the book. Additionally, the ideas, artistic approaches, and resources provided by the author and numerous contributing artists will help the reader with creative ideas for working through various situations through their reflective and artistic journal keeping. Through a marriage of beautiful imagery, uplifting and literary quotations, and other rich sources, Art Journals & Creative Healing offers its audience a full-bodied experience pertaining to creative journals, along with journaling worksheets and journal prompts to help readers get started with their own journals. Specific topics to be addressed would include using mediums as metaphors, journaling for cathartic expression, gaining wisdom through introspection and reflection, finding strength in the midst of suffering, and finding beauty in pain. Art Journals & Creative Healing is a supportive and encouraging text offered as a creative companion of sorts for those traversing over the obstacles and overcoming the challenges of life. /div

The essential aim for this project was primarily for me to be myself - an artist and curator, to research the arts of healing and decolonisation and to follow practice-led research and reflective practice. Mostly importantly, to feel free, because I know when I am in my element, working and living within my passion, I will be free to be, and have the power to progress and collaborate unheeded.I first learned of Indigenous Decolonisation through friends in the Tino Rangatiratanga Sovereignty movement in Aotearoa (New Zealand) in 2001, but since then I have also learned that the term is also a contemporary concept in Indigenous health and healing studies. Among other processes in itself, decolonisation is that of a healing journey that may involve grief, anger, rage, growth and empowerment. This PhD project is situated as a site of motivation, innovation and protest. So while it may seem unnecessary to command that artists ‘get creative’ as the title suggests, the command comes more from the activist perspective, where getting creative is sometimes the only response possible. Beyond complaining, instead we can ask of ourselves ‘What are we going to do about it?’ and get creative.

All of us repeatedly grieve, heal, and reinvent ourselves throughout our lives. Being aware of, and active in, this inherent aspect of our existence I believe to be a less painful and more satisfying way of living than blindly struggling with, or resisting, these natural processes.-John S. Campbell, M.D., author of A Journey: Creative Grieving and Healing. "We all die, he seems to be telling us. What is far more important is that we live a meaningful life before that time comes." "We all need to dig deep to find our own wisdom so we may understand what John is telling us."-Nikki DeFrain, M.S, and John DeFrain, Ph.D. from their Foreword.

Dr. Natalie Rogers has developed a process called the Creative Connection RM that interweaves all the expressive arts -- movement, sound, drawing, painting, writing, and guided imagery -- to tap into the deep wellspring of creativity within each of us. The aim is to reclaim ourselves and then help others reclaim themselves as actively playful, spirited, and conscious individuals. Rogers emphasizes the importance of psychological safety and freedom while using the creative arts. This reflects her extensive work with her father, Carl Rogers, and a deep belief in his person-centered approach to counseling.Photos and art help demystify this process, and various exercises range from the simple to the complex. Natalie's practical suggestions aid counselors who want to add expressive arts to their regular sessions.

A fresh new approach to tapping into our own creativity, using the images and artifacts of our dreams. Getting inspired is one of the toughest parts of being an artist, whether we're a beginner or a seasoned professional. But as Tom Crockett shows us in this new book, finding ideas for our artwork is easier than we think. By simply exploring the images of our sleeping and waking dream states, we can discover a wealth of ideas and inspiration that are more authentic and powerful because they reveal our underlying spiritual self. Recognizing the importance of allowing our spiritual side to infuse our art and the fulfillment this can bring, Tom Crockett has created a program to teach us all, no matter what level of artistic experience we have, how to bring art and spirit into one. The four different types of creative expression Crockett has identified--Finding, Arranging, Altering, and Making--open up artistic options for everyone, even for those of us who cannot yet imagine that we have the ability to create art. Filled with personal anecdotes from the author's creativity workshops and practical, easy-to-implement advice for tapping into our hidden creativity, The Artist Inside teaches us: how to access the dreaming world to heighten creativity that we can create in each piece of artwork a temporary home for the spirit how creating a spiritual path can energize us and increase our intuitive capacity When the process of making art is guided by the inner vision of our sleeping and waking dream states, we connect with something larger than ourselves and rediscover that creativity can be both a spiritual path and an important life tool.
