For slaves fleeing captivity, the Underground Railroad was the most viable means of escape, and with over three thousand miles of clandestine routes and secret trails, Ohio had the country's most extensive network of safe houses. A great number of these passageways were concentrated throughout the state's east central region, particularly the inland channels of Coshocton, Holmes and Guernsey Counties and the now-famous canal route, a major conduit winding through Tuscarawas and Stark Counties. Similarly, runaways sought refuge in the hills and valleys of Harrison County, as well as in the Quaker stronghold of Columbiana County. Using the letters of Wilbur H. Seibert, along with contemporary photographs of area safe houses, Janice VanHorne-Lane provides an intimate account of east central Ohio's profound contributions to the Underground Railroad and its mission, freedom for all.

By the mid-1850s, the railroad craze had hit central Ohio. Pioneer railroads that were to evolve into portions of the Baltimore and Ohio, New York Central, and Pennsylvania Railroads connected the state capital, Columbus, with the canals, Lake Erie, and the Ohio River. The region was crisscrossed by numerous other lines by 1880; Columbus became the main hub while other railroad centers included Circleville, Delaware, Mansfield, Mount Vernon, Newark, and Zanesville. Hundreds of depots were built throughout central Ohio to serve railroad passengers and to handle baggage, mail, and freight. Depots became the center of commerce and activity at communities—big and small. With the discontinuance of passenger trains across the Buckeye State, many depots disappeared from trackside—many simply demolished, others relocated for non-railroad uses. Railroad Depots of Central Ohio offers a pictorial history of selected depots, centering around Columbus and Franklin County, using old postcards and vintage photographs.

In 1785 lands of the Northwest Territory were offered for sale to the public. By 1800 four land offices were established and sales from the Zanesville office, which included tracts originally reserved for the Marietta and Steubenville offices and, more importantly, parts of the United States Military District, reserved for veterans of the Revolutionary War, form the basis of this volume. In addition, this volume also includes records from the Steubenville office for the period 1820-1840, the first twenty years of sales records having already been published. In tabular format this volume has a complete list of 22,770 persons who bought land in central and east central Ohio between 1800 and 1840. Data includes the name of the purchaser (in alphabetical order), date of purchase, place of residence at the time of purchase, and the range, township, and section of the purchased land, thus enabling the researcher to ascertain the exact location of the ancestor's land see also Items 480 and 481).

During the first half of the 20th century, Columbus grew from a population of 125,560 (1900) to a population of 375,901 (1950)-a three-fold increase. Postcards were one vehicle for recording the activities that accompanied this growth. Columbus, Ohio: 1898-1950 in Vintage Postcards includes the earliest Columbus scenic postcards, many scenes from the golden era of postcards, and later scenes that show some of the changes that occurred in Columbus between the end of World War I and the post-World War II boom of the late 1940s. The material presented is from the personal collection of the author, considered to be the most extensive collection in existence. This collection includes all of the common views such as the State Capitol, and a large number of one-of-a-kind views, including those of Papa Presutti's first saloon and of Tommy Sopwith (the English airplane manufacturer) at an air meet in Columbus in 1910.

? A poignant and heart warming story of the home-front struggle to present soldiers with simple and profound kindness during WW II. ? One of devoted and selfless giving by the grateful residents of Bellefontaine and Logan County, Ohio, to hundreds of thousands of soldiers passing through town on the New York Central Railroad during WW II. ? A warmly defining testament to a town and a region honoring the brave sons and daughters of America who went to war.During 1942, a group of civic-minded wives of railroad men began providing free lunch to every soldier passing through town on the railroad. With war rationing on, the people of Bellefontaine and Logan County, Ohio, sacrificed their food and gave their time to feed our nation's military. For 45 months day-in and day-out; week after week, around the clock, over 700,000 soldiers were nourished. The food was served by volunteers on the Columbus Avenue platforms of the New York Central Railroad. The Canteen became the home-front rallying point for the community. Ladies all over town and in the rural areas made baked goods, cooked food and volunteered at the Canteen, greeting each soldier with a smile and a kind word. Life for everyone at home during the war meant daily sacrifice. It was all done for the men and women in uniform who were making the greater sacrifice. They served soldiers passing through on furlough, troop trains, hospital trains carrying wounded soldiers home, and even the POW trains. Given a touch of home in a time of terrible world events, the soldiers derived a powerful sense of appreciation and purpose by the simple gestures of total strangers.
