This book is the sixth in a series of publications on the subject of integrated science teaching and is based on the proceedings of a consultation meeting held on the theme "Recent Developments in Integrated Science Teaching Worldwide". The meeting was organized by the Australian National Commission for Unesco, in cooperation with the International Council of Associations in Science Education (ICASE) and with the Australian Science Teachers' Association. The intention of the book is to reflect how far integrated science teaching had spread around the world. The chapters in the first part of this book describe key issues in integrated science and broad trends in the approaches to integrated science teaching worldwide. They include the conclusions of five working groups set up during the meeting to discuss the key issues in the following areas: (1) content (developments in science and technology and their implications for science education); (2) curriculum and resource materials; (3) teaching, learning, and assessment; (4) equipment and science teaching facilities; and (5) teacher education. In recent decades, East Asia has become increasingly interconnected through trade, investment, migration, and popular culture at regional and global levels. At the same time, the region has seen renewed national assertiveness and nationalist impulses. The book interrogates these seemingly contradictory developments as they bear on the transformations of the nation and citizenship in East Asia. Conventionally, studies on East Asia juxtapose these developments, focusing on the much-exercised dichotomy of the national and transnational. In contrast, this book suggests a different orientation. First, it moves beyond the simplistic view that demarcates the transnational as "the West". Second, it does not view the national and transnational as distinct or contradictory spheres of influence and analysis, but rather, focuses on the interactions between the two, with a view on how these interactions work to transform the ideals and practices of the "good nation", "good society", and "good citizen". The chapters cover a broad range of empirical research--education, science, immigration, multicultural policy, human rights, gender and youth orientations, art and food flows, politics of values and regional identity--which highlight the ways in which the nation is reconfigured, and the relationship between the citizen and (national) collective is redefined, in relation to transnational dynamics and frameworks. Transnational Trajectories in East Asia provides a new perspective on and original analysis of transnational processes, bringing a fresh understanding to developments of the nation and citizenship in the region. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of transnationalization and globalization; comparative citizenship, migration, and multiculturalism; and Asian politics, society, and regionalism.

This handbook describes international programs for undergraduates, provides a short section on selected consortia, and suggests ideas for widening international education. The programs selected for this volume met certain criteria. In addition to being effective, the programs do not place a large strain on institutional budgets and can be easily adapted by others. The volume is arranged into four chapters. Chapter I, the largest section, describes over 60 two-year and four-year college and university programs. Chapter II describes six consortia programs. Each description includes a brief introduction to the institution and an overview of the international aspects of the curriculum as well as information about how the international aspects are organized, the educational impact, and the resource persons who can be contacted for further information.
