For half a century, Michael Jackson’s music has been an indelible part of our cultural consciousness. Landmark albums such as Off the Wall and Thriller shattered records, broke racial barriers, amassed awards, and set a new standard for popular music. While his songs continue to be played in nearly every corner of the world, however, they have rarely been given serious critical attention. The first book dedicated solely to exploring his creative work, Man in the Music guides us through an unparalleled analysis of Jackson’s recordings, album by album, from his trailblazing work with Quincy Jones to his later collaborations with Teddy Riley, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Rodney Jerkins. Drawing on rare archival material and on dozens of original interviews with the collaborators, engineers, producers, and songwriters who helped bring the artist’s music into the world, Jackson expert and acclaimed cultural critic Joseph Vogel reveals the inspirations, demos, studio sessions, technological advances, setbacks and breakthroughs, failures and triumphs, that gave rise to an immortal body of work.

Dan Barker, ex-preacher and co-founder of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, travels widely, arguing in debates and speaking on his beliefs that Christianity is false, God does not exist, and the Bible is filled with errors and mythology. He has been touted as one of America’s leading atheists. Yet close examination of his arguments shows that Barker’s reasons for disbelief are poorly reasoned and miss the mark as they are aimed at a mistaken caricature of Christian theism. Answering the Music Man exposes Barker’s misunderstandings of Christianity and provides compelling answers to Barker’s arguments.

It's been more than 20 years since the story of the Ecclesia Athletic Association (EAA) captured national headlines. When 8-year-old Dana Broussard was beaten to death by the assumed cult, the story went national and was featured in various media outlets including The New York Times and, TIMEMagazine. The group's leader and founder, Eldrige Broussard, eventually made a now infamous appearance on Oprah. In the years that have passed since the national frenzy, none of the former child or adult members of the EAA have come forth with their story ... until now. David William Jackson Jr. grew up as a member of the EAA and his mother was one of the adults eventually convicted in the beating death of Dana. Today, David, better known as D.J.O.G. One, has achieved notable success in the music industry. A deejay and producer, David is presently the official deejay for the NBA's Portland Trailblazers - making him one of only two official NBA deejays. He is also an official representative of TOYOTA Scion and for Nike's Brand Jordan. David is also the only deejay from the Northwest to appear twice on BET's Rap City. In2006, ADIDAS created a limited edition tennis shoe in his name. In 2009, NIKE did the same with the exclusive O.G. One Air Force One. David's clients have included mega celebrities that range from NBA legend Michael Jordan to music stars such as Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Jamie Foxx, and a myriad of others. In The Man Behind The Music...David's only authorized biography, his complicated and inspirational life story is narrated in his own words - including never before shared details of what life was really like growing up under the leadership of Eldrige Broussard. David's story is one of perseverance and survival; from the EAA to his present status as a celebrated music figure and community activist- readers are certain to be inspired with the story of the man behind the music. The Man Behind The Music: The Life and Times of David William "O.G. One" Jackson is the seventh release from award-nominated author and activist Rochell D. Hart-better known as Ro Deezy. Ro Deezy's second book was nominated for an Oregon Book Award - the highest literary award available in that state. Ro Deezy is a frequent spoken word performer and has shared the stage with legends ranging from Nikki Giovanni to KRS-One and Dead Prez. Her spoken word performances have been solicited by agencies that range from Nike, The Urban League, The Spring Valley Domestic Violence Institute (NY) and Benet University (NC). Of all the great composers, none - not even Mozart - has been so dogged by myth and misunderstanding as Franz Schubert. The notion of Schubert as a pudgy, lovelorn Bohemian schwammerl (mushroom) scribbling tunes on the back of menus in idle moments has never quite been eradicated. In this major new biography, Brian Newbould balances discussion of Schubert's compositions with an exploration of biographical influences that shaped his musical aesthetics. Schubert: The Music and the Man offers an eminently readable description of a musician who was compulsively dedicated to his art - a composer so prolific that he produced over a thousand works in eighteen years. Gifted with an intuitive know-how, coupled with a Mozartian facility for composition, Schubert combined the relish and wonder of an amateur with the discipline and technical rigor of a professional. He moved quickly and comfortably among genres, and sometimes composed directly into score but many pieces required painstaking revision before they satisfied his growing self-criticism. Examining afresh the enigmas surrounding Schubert's religious outlook, his loves, his sexuality, his illness and death, Newbould offers above all a celebration of a unique genius, an idiosyncratic composer of an astonishing body of powerful, enduring music.

For nearly sixty years, Frank Sinatra (1915-98) triumphed in concert, in the recording studio, on television, and on the big screen, refashioning his image to suit the temper of the times. Sinatra did it "his way," remaining both elusive and alluring, and appealing to men and women alike. This collection analyzes the qualities that ensured Sinatra's staying power: his impeccable musicality, his charisma, his tough-mindedness, and even his peccadilloes. The contributors to this volume evaluate Sinatra's impact on all areas of entertainment, and examine many of the cultural forces he influenced and was influenced by, including Bing Crosby, Elvis, the "Beats," the Beatles, and Rock 'n' Roll. To a nation fed on classical music, the advent of Rahul Dev Burman with his repertoire of Western beats was a godsend. RD revolutionized Hindi film music in the 1970s, and with his emphasis on rhythm and beats, this Pied Piper of Hindi film music had young India swinging to his tunes. At the same time, this genius proved his many detractors who criticized him for corrupting popular taste wrong by composing some of the most influential raga-based songs in Hindi cinema and showing an immense comfort with all kinds of music, including Indian folk. RD: The Man, The Music looks at the phenomenon called R.D. Burman and how he changed the way Indians perceived Hindi film music. Through anecdotes and trivia that went into the making of Pancham's music - the many innovations he introduced, like mixed rhythm patterns, piquant chords and sound mixing - and through interactions with the musicians who were part of RD's team, the authors create a fascinating portrait of a man who, through his music, continues to thrive, even fifteen years after his death.

In the 1930s, Aaron Copland began to write in an accessible style he described as "imposed simplicity." Works like El Sal?n M?xico, Billy the Kid, Lincoln Portrait, and Appalachian Spring feature a tuneful idiom that brought the composer unprecedented popular success and came to define an American sound. Yet the cultural substance of that sound--the social and political perspective that might be heard within these familiar pieces--has until now been largely overlooked. While it has long been acknowledged that Copland subscribed to leftwing ideals, Music for the Common Man is the first sustained attempt to understand some of Copland's best-known music in the context of leftwing social, political, and cultural currents of the Great Depression and Second World War. Musicologist Elizabeth Crist argues that Copland's politics never merely accorded with mainstream New Deal liberalism, wartime patriotism, and Communist Party aesthetic policy, but advanced a progressive vision of American society and culture. Copland's music can be heard to accord with the political tenets of progressivism in the 1930s and '40s, including a fundamental sensitivity toward those less fortunate, support of multiethnic pluralism, belief in social democracy, and faith that America's past could be put in service of a better future. Crist explores how his works wrestle with the political complexities and cultural contradictions of the era by investing symbols of America--the West, folk song, patriotism, or the people--with progressive social ideals. Much as been written on the relationship between politics and art in the 1930s and '40s, but very little on concert music of the era. Music for the Common Man offers fresh insights on familiar pieces and the political context in which they emerged.

"In detailing his recovery from the accident and his roundabout climb back onstage, Bell shines a light in those dark corners of the music business that, for the lone musician whose success is measured not by the Top 40 but by nightly victories, usually fall outside of the spotlight. Bell's prose is not unlike his lyrics: spare, beautiful, evocative, and often sneak-up-on-you funny. His chronicle of his own life and near death on the road reveals what it means to live for one's art."--BOOK JACKET.
