Interest in the Arctic as one of the world's last energy frontiers is increasing. The indigenous peoples of the circumpolar North have long been involved in struggles to make sense of, adapt to, and negotiate the impacts and consequences of resource development, but they have also been involved in struggles to gain some measure of control over development as well as to benefit from it. With a focus on the North American Arctic, Pipeline Dreams discusses how dreams of extracting resource wealth have been significant in influencing and shaping relations between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples, as well as for the opening up of northern frontier regions to economic development. Pipeline Dreams looks at the emergence of the circumpolar North as an imagined hydrocarbon province and, through a detailed discussion of plans to explore for oil and gas and to build pipelines across the Arctic and Subarctic lands, it discusses a number of case studies from Canada and Alaska, as well as from other circumpolar regions, which illustrate some of the diverse perspectives, interests and concerns of indigenous peoples. The book considers and reflects upon the idea of the Arctic as a resource frontier and the concerns expressed by a variety of groups and commentators over the social and environmental impacts of oil and gas development, as well as the opportunities that oil and gas activities may bring to both the long-term viability of indigenous and local communities, and to the sustainability of indigenous and local livelihoods, cultures, and societies.

Gloria Harris, ne: Holland, a divorcee, social worker and nun-reject has reluctantly left her North Carolina house, job and man-friend to return to Baltimore - temporarily-- to assume family responsibilities. Her brief visit has turned from days into dismal months. After a welcome lunch, reuniting her with a childhood friend, Gloria is persuaded to direct a displaced homemakers group at a local Catholic college. Conditionally accepting this 6-week position, she forms friendships with four group members: Mari, a former New Orleans native and socialite widow, buried in hundreds of thousands of dollars debt from her late husband, and struggling to raise a teen-aged son alone; Ruth, a minister's wife whose husband left her, their son and his church with a homosexual disclosure; Sarah, a 40's something ex-hippie, whose Johns Hopkins fully-tenured professor husband has left her and their daughter for the Israeli army; Katie, a dental hygienist wife of a local periodontist, struggling with traumatic trials of divorce, while caring for her 3-year old and rebellious, teen-aged sons. Over the next 6 months, sometimes tragic, sometimes harrowing, but oftentimes humorous events unite these women in their quest for hope and a second chance for true happiness. This is a story of single-mothers pulling together, supporting one another and surviving against seemingly impossible odds, in attempt to redefine the perfect life.

A timely chronicle of how Canada's oil pipelines have become hotbeds for debate about our energy future, Indigenous rights, environmental activism, and east-west political tensions. Pipe Dreams is the dramatic story of the rise and fall of the Energy East pipeline and the broader battle over climate and energy in Canada. The project was to be a monumental undertaking, beginning near Edmonton, AB, and stretching over four thousand kilometres, through Montreal to the Irving Oil refinery in Saint John, NB. Conceived as a back-up plan for the stalled Keystone XL pipeline, it became the crucible for a national debate over the future of oil. In a cross-country journey, Poitras talked to industry executives, prairie ranchers, First Nations chiefs, mayors, premiers, cabinet ministers, and refinery workers. He also explored Canada's perplexing oil relationship with the United States: our industry is literally tied to its American counterpart with sinews of steel. The Energy East pipeline represented a new direction, designed to get Alberta oil sands crude to lucrative world markets. Yet it was promoted in explicitly nationalist terms: the country was said to be reorienting itself along its east-west axis, tying itself together, again, with a great feat of engineering. By the time the journey ended, the story had become a kind of whodunit: Poitras witnessed the slow-motion killing of the fifteen billion dollar project. Unfolding in tandem with clashes over the Trans Mountain pipeline, Energy East's demise heralded a potential turning point not just for a single proposal, but for Canada's carbon economy. Entertaining, informative, and insightful, Pipe Dreams offers a clear picture of the complicated political, environmental, and economic issues that Canadians face.

When the Whistle Blows, also known as The Sleeper, was the subject of the authors final project portfolio/thesis at Regent University. Meeting with his graduation committee in the fall of 1993, Mr. Staerkel first pitched another story idea based on a short play he had already written. However, his first idea was rejected because, in the words of the committee, "We need something new." When the author told them of a story he had heard as a youth concerning his father, the committee promptly dismissed him, and told him, "Go, and write a story about that." In 1996, a year after the tragic passing of his lovely wife, Mr. Staerkel optioned that screenplay, The Sleeper, to two Academy Award Nominated writer producers. Lauded for its crisp dialogue and dramatic scenes the screenplay was aptly renamed When the Whistle Blows. The screenplay was shopped to studios and independents, but was never produced. The novel, bearing the same name, is based on the original work.

Pipe Dreams - Book One is the first of a three book series. Stanley Walker, the author, resides in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He says, "My dream will not be complete until I can do something for my community. The book is designed to make people aware of the growing drug problem in a story form." He feels, "Stories and movies do a better job of getting the point across." Pipe Dreams - Book One offers a creative work of fiction based on facts that interweaves elements of intrigue and complex human drama into a descriptive narrative. Centered on a man named Jerry, the saga unfolds as he loses his job and begins a downward spiral into the seedy world of crack. Jerry decides to start selling the drug so that he can make a lot of money. An evocative sequence of events ensues as Faye, Jerry's lover, becomes caught up in the drug culture also. Fast-paced twists, dangerous situations and pathos combine to render an original and brilliantly detailed study of the toll that crack takes on the lives of those who cannot escape its grip. The author's intricate design, realistic dialogue, vivid descriptions, and multi-dimensional characterizations contribute to the imaginative nature of this chronicle.
