Abstract: The purpose of this directed project was to provide an educational intervention designed to increase family nurse practitioner (FNP) students' knowledge of the clinical presentation, evaluation, and treatment of vitamin D deficiency. This project utilized a pretest-posttest design to determine the baseline level of vitamin D deficiency knowledge among FNP students at a large metropolitan university in Southern California. This design helped to investigate the effectiveness of an educational intervention designed to provide knowledge regarding vitamin D deficiency among FNP students. Testing instruments were developed by the researcher. The results revealed that FNP student participants had a relatively low baseline level of knowledge pertaining to vitamin D deficiency. Most FNP student participants answered 2 or 3 of 5 questions correctly before the educational intervention. After the educational intervention, most FNP student participants answered 4 of 5 questions correctly. The educational intervention did have a statistically significant positive effect on FNP students' knowledge. Recommendations include adding vitamin D deficiency clinical practice guidelines to the educational curriculum of FNP students, our future primary health care providers. Recommendations for future research include asking FNP students, after vitamin D deficiency education, if they are willing to be an advocate for vitamin D deficiency in the clinical setting.
