This book, Understanding and Healing from TMS, is being distributed in a new format and with some editing changes. It has previously been available as The MindBody Audio Program. So this is both an older (1996-1999) and a newer book. TMS is a way of understanding and treating pain that focuses on the psychological rather than the structural or chemical. The book attempts to explain that mind-body connection, clarify who is a candidate for this approach, and detail the relevant psychology of the condition. The treatment for TMS is education and psychological insight, hence the emphasis on educational materials in this field. There are three parts to this book: a seminar that the author recorded live in the late 1990's that was recently transcribed and edited. Second part: the transcription of another audio program focusing on diagnosis and treatment. Third part: an interview with a talented psychotherapist and discussion of actual case treatment examples (anonymously) of people treated by the author along with this psychotherapist. After reviewing this transcription in early 2019, it was clear there is a lot of value remaining in this material. If you have previously listened/studied The MindBody Audio Program, you won't need to read this book. However, the relatively short and relatively inexpensive format will offer both the novice in this field and the more knowledgeable individual exposure to the thinking of the author at the time these materials were recorded. In addition, there are updates and edits to make the material more contemporaneous and relevant.

Tension myositis syndrome (TMS), also known as tension myoneural syndrome or mindbody syndrome is a name given by researchers to a condition of psychogenic musculoskeletal and nerve symptoms, most notably back pain. TMS is described many books, and stated that the condition may be involved in other pain disorders as well. The treatment protocol for TMS includes education, writing about emotional issues, resumption of a normal lifestyle and, for some patients, support meetings and/or psychotherapy. In some years, a research was carried out called a peer-reviewed study of TMS treatment showing a 54% success rate for chronic back pain. In terms of statistical significance and success rate, the study outperformed similar studies of other psychological interventions for chronic back pain. The TMS diagnosis and treatment protocol are not accepted by the mainstream medical community. However, TMS and other treatment methods have received national attention, including a segment on ABC's 20/20; and articles in Newsweek, The Seattle Times, [ and The New York Times. There are many Celebrity doctors that support TMS treatment, Notable patients treated for tension myositis syndrome include Senator Tom Harkin, John Stossel, Howard Stern, and Anne Bancroft. In 2017, TMS was covered favorably in journalist who herself suffered from back pain for decades, criticized many of the popular back pain treatments and testify.TMS is a condition in which unconscious emotional issues (primarily rage) initiate a process that causes physical pain and other symptoms. This theory suggests that the unconscious mind uses the autonomic nervous system to decrease blood flow to muscles, nerves or tendons, resulting in oxygen deprivation (temporary micro-ischemia) and metabolite accumulation, experienced as pain in the affected tissues. I theorizes that because patients often report that back pain seems to move around, up and down the spine, or from side to side, that this implies the pain may not be caused by a physical deformity or injury.Research shows states that the underlying cause of the pain is the mind's defense mechanism against unconscious mental stress and emotions such as anger, anxiety and narcissistic rage. The conscious mind is distracted by the physical pain, as the psychological repression process keeps the anger/rage contained in the unconscious and thereby prevented from entering conscious awareness. We believes that when patients recognize that the symptoms are only a distraction, the symptoms then serve no purpose, and they go away. TMS can be considered a psychosomatic condition and has been referred to as a "distraction pain syndrome". Adel is a vocal critic of conventional medicine with regard to diagnosis and treatment of back pain, which is often treated by rest, physical therapy, exercise and/or surgery

The Great Pain Deception was awarded Runner-Up Finalist in "Best New Health Book" of 2012 and also honored as Finalist in "Health: Alternative Medicine." Back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, hand and foot pain, rarely come from herniated discs and joint failures. Pain, such as fibromyalgia, is a deception of the mind created by the brain to keep dark, threatening, and sad emotions from entering consciousness. The vast majority of pains and symptoms emanate from a mindbody process stemming from a personality of perfectionism. However, pain is not "in the mind" of the sufferer--and is often misrepresented as such by people who reject a mindbody process for reasons of ego and monetary gain. Symptoms inside and outside of the body are primarily the result of emotional conflict hidden within the body and outside of awareness. We live in a world of medical marvels. However, those marvels have become a double-edged sword, often creating more problems than they resolve. John Sarno, MD, at the NYU School of Medicine discovered in the 1970s that back pain was not coming from the things seen on the imaging, such as herniated discs, arthritis, stenosis, scoliosis, etc. Pain was coming from oxygen reduction through the autonomic nervous system due to elevated tension levels, but had been errantly linked to the "normal abnormalities" seen on MRIs and X-rays. Most physicians refused to believe his findings even though his success rate in healing the most troublesome of pain-cases was well above theirs. Dr. Sarno labeled the disorder TMS, or tension myoneural syndrome, currently being called The Mindbody Syndrome. Inside The Great Pain Deception Steve tells his compelling story of a 30-year battle with pain and ultimate healing after discovering Dr. Sarno's work. After Steve healed he began receiving hundreds of emails, calls, and letters, asking for his help--too many to respond to, so he decided to write his experience down in a book. After 10 years of research, Steve has conveyed an amazing testimonial of triumph over tragedy, an inspiring story of healing that is a must read if you suffer from any ailment from mild to severe. The only thing standing between good health, and healing, is ego. Pain and unpleasant symptoms serve a purpose. Disease is the report card of how happy we are; feedback of a life not lived. Symptoms are anger flowing over into the physical realm, signs of internal conflict. Pain and illness are the virtual language of the unconscious mind. When we are untrue to ourselves and needs, living by the codes and wishes of others, denying our deepest desires--symptoms then form to reveal the deeper conflict. Modern medicine is pointing us toward our bodies in the attempt to cure us through engineering the human system. These high-tech processes are often making us worse by ignoring the message that the body is trying to convey through such things as colitis, irritable bladder, fibromyalgia, skin disorders and an infinite variety of other symptoms, including cancer. This book does an excellent job of exploring the realm of mind within body--and ultimate healing.

As understanding evolves about how different brain regions are involved in carrying out everyday tasks -- and in causing brain diseases when they go awry -- this book describes a new technology that allows physicians to focally stimulate the brain in awake adults through a non-invasive procedure. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Clinical Psychiatry is an accessible and authoritative review of TMS, a procedure that is showing promise as a treatment in several disorders. Its authors explain how the procedure works, then the latest findings in a wide range of situations -- notably in depression, but also in other conditions ranging from migraine to stroke recovery. This concise overview of TMS offers practical guidance for psychiatrists and other clinicians using it as a therapy, or referring their patients to have this done, as well as updating the field for neuroscientists and neurologists. It begins with background on the physics and safety of TMS, a guide for administering the procedure, and a review of basic neurophysiological studies with TMS, showing how it can be used to measure connectivity and excitability of the cerebral cortex. The heart of book is then devoted to its clinical applications, organized by disorder: Epilepsy, movement disorders, and pain -- describes the use of TMS in inducing and inhibiting seizures and investigating their pathophysiology; in treating Parkinson's disease; and in relieving pain through motor cortex stimulation Major depression -- provides a critical review of research in the most-studied clinical application of TMS in psychiatry, where it is used as a therapeutic intervention and a neurophysiological probe Mania -- explores the effectiveness of TMS in light of its ECT-like properties through a trial of right TMS vs. sham TMS Anxiety disorders -- reports on investigations on the uses of TMS in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder Schizophrenia -- reviews studies utilizing single- or paired-pulse TMS to assess cortical inhibition and those that explore effects of extended trains of repetitive TMS in altering symptoms A further chapter on TMS in brain imaging shows how integrating imaging and TMS allows one to better place the TMS coil, better understand TMS effects on the brain, and improve understanding of how the brain mediates behavior. With a concluding overview of prospects for the future of repetitive TMS, this volume offers a definitive look at this cutting-edge research and provides critical guidance on how and when clinicians might use TMS in their practice.

Chronic pain has been correctly described as the invisible crisis at the heart of contemporary life. Despite stunning advances in other areas of medical science, no similar breakthrough in the treatment of chronic pain has resulted from an exclusive focus on the body. Dr James Alexander’s young life was redefined by a tragic car accident in his late teens, and the chronic physical and emotional trauma inspired him to become a psychologist. Now pain-free, Dr Alexander has dedicated the last three decades of his life to helping others overcome similar challenges, specializing in the treatment of chronic pain and psychological trauma. His success is proof that recovery from chronic pain is possible, and this guide offers a valuable resource for working toward that goal. The recovery from chronic pain requires that we revisit and challenge the outdated attitudes and practices that have been used with little result. With the proliferation of medical and psychological research, for the first time we are at a point in history where these notions of pain recovery can be validated by research-based evidence. For too long, Dr Alexander feels, we have been looking in all the wrong places. Specifically, the problem lies at the core of our culture, which still treats the physical and nonphysical aspects of the human as separate experiences. This innovative program involves a journey of self-discovery, a new way to approach medical and psychological care of chronic pain, and advice on the most effective types of help to pursue.

First discovered by Martin Luther, Theologia Germanica was originally published in 1516. This reprint of the 1893 edition was translated by British scholar SUSANNE WINKWORTH (1820-1884). A departure from many Christian writings of the period, this work suggests that by following in Christ's path, anyone could be united with God, for the life of Christ is an example of perfection for all to follow. With its discussions of sin and explanations as to how selfishness is the fundamental sin, this classic book will appeal to religions scholars and anyone interested in the Reformation. German theologian and reformer MARTIN LUTHER (1483-1546) argued against many of the common practices of the Roman Catholic Church, including the selling of indulgences and the Church's insistence that it needed to mediate between people and God. Luther's writings were greatly influential in the Protestant Reformation, which forever changed Christianity. He wrote a number of important works, although many consider his translation of the Bible into German to be one of his most important contributions.

A Personal Underworld follows the struggles and ultimate triumph of one man, who embarked on a journey of self-discovery and healing with enduring results. This true story reflects the courageous efforts of a young man seeking his way out of emotional and physical suffering. His search into his unconscious - or as he refers to it as his personal underworld - allowed him to chase away for good the many shadows and ghosts that resided there. Only by truly listening and learning form these disenchanted parts within him, did the real healing begin. Anxiety disorder, chronic prostatitis, pelvic pain, IBS, back pain and gastrointestinal problems alongside many other physical aches and pains were the manifestations of disease in his life. A Personal Underworld details this young mans journey towards peace of mind, healing and ultimate understanding.
